Consistencies of Cannabis Extracts Part 1 of 2
Extracts Made With Solvents 🤯
Wax
Â
Wax is both one of the most widely consumed products as well as a generic term to describe cannabis extracts. Traditionally this extract known as wax goes from a butane or propane extraction from cured or dry cannabis. This wax can range from a softer to stable consistency. Some extraction labs will further process the wax into other products that have a more predictable consistency. Additionally, wax is a widely accepted term or slang for any form of cannabis extract, while most other types of cannabis extracts refer to a very specific type of consistency in the finished product.
Â
 Butter or Budder or Batter/Badder
Â
Very similar terms for very different products. Butter is a term that should generally be left in the kitchen. Medicated butter known as cannabutter is the most common use of this term. Budder is generally in reference to extracts made from dry or cured cannabis, producing a thick wax consistency similar to that of butter. Batter or badder as coined by the cannabis industry are both terms used typically reserved to be used in reference to fresh frozen extractions extracted with butane or propane, this produces the product many know as live resin. Live resin badder is one of the most popular extracts in many dispensaries as it provides consumers who plan to “dab” the product an easy to manage consistency where they can accurately and easily enjoy their cannabis extract.
Shatter
Â
A classic cannabis concentrate that is becoming increasingly harder to find! Pre-2020 the saying for cannabis concentrates went “if it doesn’t shatter it doesn’t matter”. Current day 2025 shatter has become an elusive concentrate sometimes not on a dispensary’s shelves at all! Many have theories on why this may be, however most agree it is due to shatters consistency being generally difficult to handle for both employees and consumers alike. A perfect slab of shatter can be a very enjoyable cannabis extract to consume, however if the shatter is not stable enough it will be sticky/sappy, or if shatter is too stable it can easily break down into very tiny pieces. This can make it very frustrating to handle the product, occasionally leaving the consumer with a less than positive experience. While this consistency of cannabis concentrate was enjoyed for many years, here in 2025 shatter has seemingly taken a backseat.
Â
Crumble
Â
Crumble is a form of wax that tends to be well…. crumbly. This cannabis extract can be found in either a wet or dry consistency. Many consumers enjoy crumble for ease of use and typically flavorful experience. Unlike traditional wax extracts think of crumble like the dip n’ dots of cannabis extracts, comes together in one pack but easily breaks apart into delicious little pieces!
Honeycomb
Â
This cannabis concentrate is a rarer find but still worth the mention due to its photogenic nature and overall appeal. Nothing quite like a piece of honeycomb, especially one you can dab! Honeycomb extract is another type of wax with a typically drier consistency resembling the texture of honeycombs!!
Â
Sap
Â
This consistency of extract is typically only encountered when CBD is present. CBD generally a derivative of hemp, can also be found in cannabis extracts. If CBD is present, you can expect your cannabis extract to be of a sappier consistency.
Â
Diamonds and sauce
Â
Diamonds and sauce is as exactly as it sounds, THCA diamonds in a terpene sauce! This live resin extraction made from fresh frozen cannabis is a highly sought after product! This arguably one on the most photogenic cannabis concentrates brining an incredibly high appeal to all consumers!!
Â
Distillate
Â
Distillate is far different from any other extracts on the list here as it has gone through a process known as distillation. This process strips the cannabis extract of all compounds except the THC and CBD found in the cannabis plant. This provides for a purified oil to be widely used in many of the edibles and vapes you find available in your local dispensaries!
