Cannabis Extraction: Granular and Powdered Filtration Media

Powdered

Powdered filtration media is widely used across many industries to purify and clean air, water, oil, and yes even cannabis! This powdered grade of filtration media is a heavily refined particle reduced to 180 micron or smaller in size. With this smaller size of the filter media, the flow rate of the solution will be reduced going through the filter media. Being that the flow rate is reduced contact or the retention time of the solution to be filtered with the filtration media is increased. Increased retention time improves the efficiency of the filter media and requiring less filter media to be used to produce the desired outcome/filter your product. This type of filtration media is best used when packed in layers in appropriate proportions. If these layers are measured and packed appropriately, the results and flow rate of powdered filtration media can be very precise and consistent. This filtration media can be hand packed by an extraction technician, however due to respiratory hazards it is recommend that this filtration media be purchased in a concealed and pre-packed cartridge filter from Absolute Filtration Systems. The different types of powdered filtration media available and used in today’s cannabis extraction methods include alumina’s, carbon, clays, and silicates.

Granular

Granular filtration media is the bulkier predecessor to the powdered media before it is completely refined. Granular filtration media is of larger size beginning at 200 micron or higher in size, these granules are comprised of some or all of the filtration medias; alumina’s, carbon, clays, and silicates. These granules are offered in different compositions containing varying amounts of these compounds. These granules provide a one type fits all solution with fast flow rates and minimal retention time unless the flow rate reduced. With minimal contact time an excessive amount of granular media is typically needed to be consistently effective. Same as the powdered filtration media, this granular filtration media can be hand packed or loaded by an extraction technician, however due to respiratory hazards it is recommend that this filtration media be purchased in a concealed and pre-packed cartridge filter from Absolute Filtration Systems.
