Consistencies of Cannabis Extracts Part 2 of 2
Rosin
While there are four types of rosin that can be made; hash rosin and live rosin dominate this space over the less desirable flower or kief rosin. Flower and kief rosin are made from dried and cured cannabis generally producing an extract that is less potent and flavorful than that of rosin harvested from fresh frozen uncured cannabis. Flower rosin translates exactly, it is a form of cannabis extract that is achieved by using heat and pressure applied to the plant material to squish the oil out of the cannabis. Many at cannabis consumers have experienced this at one point or another via hair straightener and parchment paper *please do not try at home*. Kief rosin comes from sifting cannabis through a screen such as a trim bin to collect the fallen kief, this kief is then collected and squished just like the flower rosin. While cleaner than the flower rosin this kief rosin is still from an aged and cured product and will not produce the potency or flavor that can be achieved through extracting fresh frozen cannabis. Extracting this fresh frozen cannabis gives us the product we know as hash rosin or in some cases live rosin, depending on how the packaging/description of the product. The use of the term “live” helps consumers confirm what they are buying came from a fresh frozen extraction. For this type of extraction, the fresh frozen cannabis must first be extracted via water to obtain what is known as water hash. Once the water hash is acquired it will be also squished with a rosin press through a filter bag. This allows the oil to be pressed out while any contaminants remain behind, this is the final step towards the journey to the rosin’s final form. The final consistencies can vary from cold cure, to badder, to even a rosin jam that is similar texture and consistency to the beloved BHO diamonds and sauce.
Water Hash
Water hash as mentioned above comes from a water-based extraction performed on freshly frozen cannabis. This can be performed either by hand or with a cannabis washing machine. After soaking and lightly agitating the fresh frozen cannabis the water from this extraction is then directed through either a sieve or a series of bubble bags to collect various sizes of cannabis trichome heads. These trichome heads are then collected and placed into a freeze dryer where any and all of the residual moisture will be removed so the water hash may be consumable or further processed into hash rosin or live rosin. Water hash may also be referred to as bubble hash, this product is sold unsquished and is typically “melted” by the consumer before use. - Anyone who has melted and cut out some flags before knows what I’m talking about, use a moderately warm butter knife to “press and melt” some bubble/water hash between parchment paper making it easier for the consumer to dab and enjoy! *Please don’t try at home, this why they sell rosin already pressed for you*
6* and Piatella
These two terms are reserved for the best of the best! 6* hash is a term and product that has long existed although is illusive to find. To have a true 6* hash means everything from start to finish was as good as it gets providing truly astonishing resin or in this case rosin. Originally 6* referred to top tier water hash but now after the rosin evolution, this also applies to specific top shelf rosins in today’s common cannabis market. Piatella is a relatively new product who I first produced by Zio out of Barcelona, Spain in the 2020 Ego Clash. This pioneered product consisted of freshly frozen cannabis that was cold cured over a long period of time with minimal exposure to oxygen. This product is highly sought after with minimal availability due to its long cure times. Piatella in my opinion is the true modern day 6* hash as only the best hash will produce piatella. Happy Hunting 😎
