Why Hand Pack CRC When There Is Pre-Packed AFS Cartridges
If you run a closed-loop extractor, you already know the nightmare that is traditional Color Remediation Column (CRC) prep. It usually starts around 7:00 AM: putting on a respirator, measuring out loose bentonite, silica, or D. E. under a hood or outside, and trying to pack a column evenly without making a mess.
Then you pray it doesn't channel or clog. One poorly tamped layer, and the solvent creates a pinhole through the bed, turning a clear golden run into murky green sludge. If the column is packed too tightly then the run will take much longer than needed and likely be over remediated from too much contact time.
Switching our extraction machine over to pre-packaged disposable cartridges from AFS Filters (Absolute Filtration Systems) fundamentally changed our daily workflow and output. Here is what running these cartridges looks like from a technicians point of view.
The Drop-In Workflow
The biggest operational shift is time and containment. Instead of spending 30 to 45 minutes packing powders, cleaning sintered disks, and torquing multiple sanitary clamps onto multiple CRC spools, changeover takes roughly 60 seconds using the same housing:

Crack open the stainless cartridge housing.

Drop in the AFS filter cartridge or filter cup whichever you prefer to call it.

Seal the housing and pull vacuum to prepare for your extraction.
Because the filtration media is factory packed the bed density is uniform. The base has an integrated 2.5 µm paper filter molded straight into the filter, which retains all the crc media during the run and after for disposal.
Dialing in the Run: Pressure, Temp, and Flow
Running AFS cartridges smoothly requires tuning your operating parameters to their specs:
Operating Pressure: Keep your nitrogen assist smooth. While the paper backing can hold up to 100+ psi, pushing solvent through at 20 to 30 psi is the sweet spot. It gives adequate residence time for the media to scrub pigments, lipids, and heavy metals without going through the filter bed too fast. Temperature stability is no issue as the filters are chemical-grade polypropylene rated from -80°C to 70°C. They handle cryo-hydrocarbon extractions (butane/propane mixes) without cracking, breaking, or having seal failures. Each cartridge is typically good for 5 to 7 lbs of cured biomass (depending on how degraded or dark the starting material is). Running past the cartridge’s saturation point leads to bleed-through color on the tail end of the pour.
Matching the Cartridge to the Biomass
AFS formats cartridges by target output rather than forcing you to guess powder ratios:
Light: Ideal for top-tier whole flower or fresh frozen inputs that only need a light polish to remove yellowing while preserving high-volatility terpene profiles. Medium: The workhorse for typical trim runs. Removes carotenoids and chlorophyll effectively without flattening the extract's nose. Heavy: Packed with aggressive scrubbing media. Essential for older, oxidized biomass where you need to strip heavy red/amber hues down toward water-clear. P+: Tailored specifically for runs requiring heavy metal or targeted pesticide remediation.
The Verdict
On paper, bulk hand packing media looks cheaper. In reality, hand packing media bleeds money through labor hours (mainly cleaning), respirator cartridge replacements, spent downtime on extractions due to clogged sintered disks.
AFS cartridges turn CRC from a black magic art form into a repeatable, plug-and-play solution. At the end of the run, instead of scraping compacted, solvent-soaked media out of a column, you simply pull the spent cup, discard it, and prep the next column in under a minute. Not having to clean CRC media constantly, that alone pays for the cartridge cost.
